Chapter 1: Getting Started – Requirements and Codes
Before you can begin your practical driving lessons, you must understand the legal requirements for obtaining a licence in South Africa. This chapter covers the different types of licences, the age restrictions, and the process for applying for your learner’s licence.
1.1 Vehicle Licence Codes Explained
South Africa uses a system of codes to classify different types of vehicles. The most common codes for non-commercial drivers are:
- Code A1: Motorcycles with an engine capacity of 125cc or less.
- Code A: Motorcycles with an engine capacity greater than 125cc.
Note: To obtain an unrestricted Code A licence, you must take the practical test on a motorcycle larger than 125cc. If you are over 18 but test on a scooter (e.g., 110cc), you will be restricted to an A1 licence. - Code B: Light motor vehicles (cars) with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 3,500 kg or less. This includes minibuses or goods vehicles with a GVM of 3,500 kg or less. A trailer with a GVM of 750 kg or less is permitted.
- Code EB: This is for a light motor vehicle (Code B) that is towing a trailer with a GVM of more than 750 kg (e.g., large caravans).
1.2 Age and Health Requirements
You must meet the minimum age requirement to apply for a learner’s licence for your desired code:
- Age 16: For a Code A1 motorcycle.
- Age 17: For a Code B light motor vehicle.
- Age 18: For a Code A motorcycle and all other vehicle codes (including heavy vehicles).
In addition to age, you must also pass an eye test. This is conducted at the Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) when you apply. If you fail the eye test, you will need to have an optometrist or ophthalmologist examine your eyes and complete the required forms.
1.3 The Learner’s Licence Application Process
Your first step is to get a Learner’s Licence by passing the theoretical test. What you need to do:
- Book Your Test: Visit the NaTIS online portal (mandatory for Gauteng and some major metros) or your nearest DLTC to book a test date.
- Complete the Application Form (LL1): This form is available at the DLTC.
- Provide Identification: You will need your original South African ID book or ID card. Foreign nationals will need their passport and traffic register number certificate.
- Proof of Residence: You must provide a utility bill, bank statement, or affidavit confirming your residential address (FICA requirement).
- Photos: You will need two recent, identical, black-and-white or colour ID-sized photographs.
- Pay the Fees: You will need to pay the application fee and the test booking fee. The amounts vary by municipality.
- The Eye Test: Your eyesight will be tested by a DLTC official.
- Receive Your Test Date: You will be given a receipt and a confirmed date and time for your written test.
1.4 Validity and Rules of a Learner’s Licence
- A Learner’s Licence is valid for 24 months (2 years) from the date of issue.
- You must always be accompanied by a fully licenced driver who holds a valid licence for the same class of vehicle you are driving. This person must sit in the front passenger seat.
- Passenger Rules: You are allowed to carry passengers in the vehicle, provided your licensed supervisor is present and the passengers are not being carried for reward (paying fare).
- You must display an “L” plate on the rear window of the vehicle. The plate must be a red ‘L’ on a white background.
