The K53 driving test is fundamentally a test of your observation skills. Performing the correct observation sequence before every action is mandatory. Use this guide to memorise the patterns. The examiner needs to see your head move.
The Core Principle: Mirror, Signal, Blindspot
Almost every action is preceded by a variation of this sequence.
Sequence 1: Moving Off from a Stationary Position
(e.g., At the start of the test or after pulling over)
- Mirrors: Check your interior rear-view mirror, then the exterior mirror for the direction you intend to move (usually the right mirror).
- Blindspot: Check the blindspot over your shoulder in the direction of movement.
- Signal: Signal your intention.
- Move: As you begin to move, check the blindspot one last time.
Mnemonic: Mirror -> Blindspot -> Signal -> Go (with a final blindspot check)
Sequence 2: Turning at an Intersection (Left or Right)
(When approaching the turn)
- Mirrors: Check your interior rear-view mirror, then the exterior mirror for the direction you are turning (e.g., left mirror for a left turn).
- Signal: Signal your intention in good time.
- Blindspot: Check the blindspot over your shoulder just before you begin to turn.
- Turn: Execute the turn.
Mnemonic: Mirror -> Signal -> Blindspot -> Turn
Sequence 3: Changing Lanes
- Mirrors: Check your interior rear-view mirror, then the exterior mirror for the lane you are moving into.
- Signal: Signal your intention.
- Blindspot: Check the blindspot for the lane you are moving into.
- Change Lane: If safe, steer smoothly into the new lane.
- Cancel Signal: Ensure your indicator is off.
Mnemonic: Mirror -> Signal -> Blindspot -> Go
Sequence 4: Stopping or Pulling Over to the Side of the Road
- Mirrors: Check your interior rear-view mirror, then the exterior mirror for the side you are stopping on (usually the left).
- Signal: Signal your intention.
- Blindspot: Check the blindspot on the side you are stopping.
- Stop: Bring the vehicle to a smooth stop.
Mnemonic: Mirror -> Signal -> Blindspot -> Stop
Sequence 5: Routine Scanning (While Driving Straight)
- Frequency: Every 5 to 8 seconds.
- Pattern: Check your interior rear-view mirror, then glance at your left mirror, then your right mirror, and then back to the road ahead. This keeps you constantly aware of the traffic situation around you.
