The Learner’s Licence test is your first step. It is a written (or computer-based) exam designed to ensure you have the foundational knowledge required before you even get behind the wheel.

3.2 Rules of the Road

This section covers the legal framework for driving. You will need to know:

  • Speed limits in different areas (urban, rural, freeway).
  • Following distances (the two-second rule).
  • Procedures at intersections and traffic circles.
  • Rules regarding pedestrians and emergency vehicles.
  • When and where you are allowed to overtake.

3.3 Road Signs, Signals, and Markings

Visual communication is key to road safety. On the Learner’s Test, you must be able to instantly recognize and understand the meaning of every sign.

Regulatory signs are the law of the road expressed in symbols. They are non-negotiable commands.

Action: First to stop is first to proceed. If simultaneous, vehicle on right has priority.

R2 Yield Sign

Meaning: Give way to all cross-traffic and pedestrians.

Action: Slow down. Stop if necessary. Only enter if safe.

R2.2 Yield at mini-circle sign

Meaning: Give way to traffic in circle or from right.

Meaning: Approaching speed humps.

Action: Slow down significantly before hump.

W306 Pedestrian crossing sign

Meaning: Approaching marked crossing.

Action: Slow down, ready to stop for pedestrians.

3.4 Vehicle Controls

You need to identify and explain the function of every control inside the car.

Foot Pedals
